Blackheads are a type of acne, and there are several different types of acne:
- Open comedones: Also known as blackheads, these are dark-colored bumps that form when surface pigments collect in pores. Blackheads are not filled with dirt, but appear black due to the inner lining of the hair follicle.
- Closed comedones: Also known as whiteheads, these form when a hair follicle is completely blocked. Whiteheads look similar to blackheads, but may be firmer and will not empty when squeezed.
- Giant comedones: A type of cyst with a blackhead-like opening in the skin.
- Macrocomedones: Facial closed comedones that are larger than 2–3 mm in diameter.
- Microcomedones: Extremely small comedones that are usually not visible.
- Solar comedones: Typically result from sun damage and usually form in older adults, primarily on the cheeks.
- Acne mechanica: Caused by heat, friction, and pressure against the skin, often the result of wearing sports gear.
- Dilated Pore of Winer: A common, giant blackhead pimple, found on your head, neck and torso.
Other types of acne include papules, pustules, and nodules.
